Americans’ Confidence Wavers in Trump’s Economic Strategy

A recent poll reveals a growing sense of unease among Americans regarding President Trump’s ability to steer the economy. With his administration ramping up the trade war through significant regulatory changes on imports and exports, public opinion appears to be shifting.

According to the latest CBS News poll, a concerning 52% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s economic management, while only 49% offer their approval. When it comes to handling inflation, disapproval rises to 56%, leaving just 44% in favor.

Many respondents feel that Trump is focusing on the wrong priorities. A striking 55% believe he is overly fixated on tariffs, while only 38% think he’s appropriately addressing this issue. Merely 7% contend that he should be paying even more attention to tariffs.

This poll follows Trump’s recent declaration of imposing 25% tariffs on foreign-made cars and auto parts, heightening tension in international trade. On the horizon, Trump is poised to unveil reciprocal tariffs aimed at American trading partners later this week.

When it comes to price control, the public is demanding more action from the President. A notable 64% of respondents wish Trump would spend more time tackling rising prices, while 31% believe he’s striking the right balance. Only 5% feel he’s overly focused on this issue.

Despite widespread criticism of the economy under Trump’s leadership, some Americans still lay the blame for today’s inflation on former President Biden’s shoulders. In the poll, 38% attribute the current inflation rate to Biden’s policies, while 34% point fingers at Trump. Interestingly, 19% believe both administrations share equal responsibility, and 9% say neither should be blamed.

In a surprising twist, many Americans commend the current administration for its immigration policies. Approval ratings show 56% of respondents are satisfied with how immigration is being managed, contrasting sharply with the economy’s standing.

Conducted with a sample of 2,609 U.S. adults from March 27-28, the CBS News poll carries a margin of error of ± 2.3 percent, highlighting the significant concerns of the electorate as they navigate a pivotal economic landscape.
